Memorial Sermon

Bro Cary Kemp, October 2, 2015

After a brief history of Brother Kemp, Brother Moran presented him to our attention. Brother Kemp stated it is truly an honor to stand before this congregation. He said when he was elected to do this last year, he didn’t know his mother’s name would be read. He then read Revelation 14:13. He spoke of the special memories of many of those who had gone on to be with the Lord. He read from Joshua 3:12-17 and 4:1-10. He spoke of how God delivered the people over the Jordan on dry land. He spoke of the stones taken for a memorial for the children to know. Those who have gone on before have left a great memorial. It is good to honor the ones who have gone on, but we must give the greatest honor to God. We must serve God because we love Him. Their lives serve as a memorial to the honor and glory of our Savior Jesus Christ. He spoke of the good work of his mother because she loved the Lord. Brother Kemp stated that he is afraid our children don’t have as many memorials as we had in the past. We must stress to our children that they need salvation most of all. We can’t do anything without the Lord’s help. Jesus is the one we are to glorify. He said his heart is fixed by the Lord. Millions of people have left this world, but there is something special when God’s people leave this world. They have a special place to go – Heaven. He told of how he was made a new creature when he got saved. He told of how people would be praying and shouting before they even got to church. We need to embrace Christ. He is the precious pearl of great price. We need to lay aside other things and put God first. People of the past put Jesus first and we need to continue it today. We need to set up spiritual memorials. The only way we can win souls is through Jesus. Brother Kemp then read 2 Peter 1:4-16. Peter would not be negligent to stir up our memories. Neither should we. People have sacrificed much so we can have the gospel today. Don’t be ashamed to stand up and testify to anyone. We are not to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ. Brother Kemp stated that he is thankful for the memories of the saints in his life. We need to bring up children to know how to serve the Lord. A preacher will have liberty when people follow the Lord. He said he wants his grandchildren to have those memories of people serving the Lord. Those who have gone on left the examples to us through Jesus and we need to pass it on. We need power in our churches so they can continue on. Brother Kemp closed asking that we continue in the faith.

Brother Moran came forward remarking about those who have gone on and expressing his thanks for the message that was brought by Brother Kemp. He asked for a song and for all to come around and shake hands with Brother Kemp and Brother Fugate. Brother Andy Knight led “Jesus Hold My Hand” and “Because He Lives” with Sister Tammy Painter accompanying at the piano. Brother Moran then asked for testimonies. After good and spiritual testimonies, Brother Moran asked Brother Taylor Gregory to lead “When I Step Off on That Beautiful Shore.”

After more testimonies, motion and second to adopt report as read.
